Hand Foot and Mouth is a common childhood condition affecting mainly children under the age of 5.  It is a skin condition that can be unpleasant and uncomfortable.  It is a bacterial condition which is very similar to Impetigo and manifests as eruptions on the extremities and sometimes around the mouth as well as in the mouth.

1st stage symptoms are: –

  • Spots turning into watery blisters.

The condition usually lasts between 7-10 days.

There is no need to quarantine but it is sensible to keep your child at home whilst they are feeling unwell.  The condition is very contagious and is spread through contact such as hugging, kissing etc.  It’s not dangerous but if you or your family have HFMD it is best to avoid pregnant women to avoid any birth complications.
