Sinusitis

Sinusitis can be very misleading.  There are several sinuses in the head, all of which can produce mucous from their membranes.  We have the frontal – above the brow which causes pain over the eyes and across the forehead, the brow feels heavy and eyes can be sensitive to light,  the maxillary – beneath the eyes and besides the nose, these cause pain and pressure in the cheekbones and neuralgic pains in the teeth and obstruction of the nasal passages,  the ethmoid – above and behind the bridge of the nose, these tend to cause pressure and pain at the bridge of the nose and behind the eyes and can bring a splitting headache and post nasal drip.  with two deeper sinuses called the Sphenoid.

Sinusitis can be an acute condition as the result of an infection or chronic which is due to repeatedly suppressed infections or perhaps an allergic reaction or a combination of these.

In treating acute Sinus issues use the 30c potency and repeat 3- 4 times daily.  Depending on how the symptoms progress you may need to repeat the same remedy, if no significant change in 2 days move to a new one.  If lasting benefit is not felt, you may find it necessary to alternate between two well indicated and related remedies for instance, Puls/Kali-Sulph, Lyc/Arsen Alb, Kali-bich/Puls.

Below is a list of common remedies for sinus issues.  Remember pick 3 or 4 symptoms that match with the remedy and be prepared to change remedy as the condition progresses.

Remedies for Sinusitis

Arsensicum Album

Thin watery mucous constantly drips from the nose but the sinuses (especially the frontal and maxillary) feel obstructed.  Sometimes the right nostril feels blocked.  Raw, Sore or burning sensations in the sinuses and nose.  Colds that will not resolve and feel as if they are going down on the chest.  Stuffy head that can become a headache.  Sometimes Arsensicum Album is followed well by Kali Mur when what remains is stuffiness in the nose and white/grey mucous, confirmed by the white/grey coating of the tongue.

Calcarea Carbonica

Root of nose feels swollen, yellow catarrh blocks sinuses and patient is aware of a rotten smell (rotting vegetation).  Edge of the nostrils feel dry and sore, may have ulcerated patch inside.  Nose is dry and blocked at night and runs in the day.  Nosebleed on blowing.

Kali Bichromicum

Thick, sticky, yellow mucous that clogs up the nose and sinuses in the frontal sinuses, with headache, patients want pressure on the forehead and maxillary area.  Sneezing can bring out strings of foul catarrh that are difficult to detach.  If severe, the inside of the nostrils will be full of crusty plugs of mucous that are hard to pick off without causing bleeding.  Mouth breathing with nasal sounding voice.  Sometimes Kali-Sulph or Hydrastis will do better.  Kali Sulph is often used to finish off a simple cold when yellow catarrh is all that needs to be cleared away.  Hydrastis covers thick yellow (even fluorescent coloured) mucus especially from the back of the nose

Lycopodium

Blockage of the nose forces mouth breathing with constant sniffing, hard to blow anything out.  At night the nose is dry and blocked causing snoring and a frontal headache.  The right nostril may have blocked up first, followed by the left.  Mucous rattles in the throat and chest.  Feels better for warm drinks which slightly alleviate the blockage temporarily.

Mercurius Solubilis

Yellow-Green mucous is too thick to run but caused rawness and soreness.  Bones around the sinuses feel swollen and painful.  Breath smells foul, metallic taste in the mouth.  Viscid clear saliva with dribbling in sleep.  Very thirsty for cold water.  Temperature goes up and down.  If the condition keeps relapsing and there is obviously a build-up of phlegm in the chest, then you may need to ask your Practitioner for Merc-Sulph.  This is especially true if the patient is consistently warm or overheating.

Natrum Muriaticum

Cheekbones feel achy and sinuses feel dried up and yet stuffed up.  Inside of nose feels sore and swollen, painful to blow hard.  Sudden flow of white-of-egg mucous with loss of smell and taste which is brought on by a bout of violent sneezing.  Very thirsty and not hungry for anything but savoury snacks.  This remedy can be mistaken for Nat-Carb which is similar but covers soreness and redness of the nose with great sensitivity to draughts, the sun and dairy products.   Very cross mood too.  Nat Sulph is also similar but less affected by cold, thick yellow mucous with salty tasting catarrh and the tongue is greenish or brown.

Nux Vomica

Stuffed up and snuffly breathing with blockage alternating between left and right.  Blocked up at night and outside in the cold, running mucous in the day.  May complain of ache in gums or teeth as well.  Prickly tickles felt in the nose.  Especially suited to those who are driven and irritable.  Sticta Pulmonaria might be considered for blockage at the root of the nose, dryness of the mucous membranes and a constant need to blow without discharge.

Pulsatilla

Thick yellow catarrh with dry mouth and throat and no thirst.  Loss of smell and taste.  Blocked nose better when out in the fresh air, worse for being stuffed up indoors.  Tongue might be yellowish.  Sometimes a Pulsatilla is greatly support by a daily dose of Silica 6c or 30c.

Sepia

Thick green or yellow ropy mucous which has to be hawked up from the back of the throat.  Crusts in the nose.  Useful when patient is exhausted and fed up or has just had a menstrual cycle.  Nostrils feel sore as cold air is drawn through.

Silica

Nose crusts up and bleeds when these are picked out, edges of nostril can be cracked and sore.  Mucous is whitish and frothy but nose feels dry.  Patient complains of sensations in the ears, cracking and popping.
